Netballers Pretty in Pink

Hyde Netball Club Supports Pink Week!

Hyde Netball Club Supports Pink Week!

Last week saw netballers teaming together to raise money for the world’s leading charity dedicated to beating cancer.

Northern Thunders first televised game of the season against Mavericks saw players warming up in pink week souvenir t-shirts which were available to purchase at the game with all proceeds going to cancer research.

Netball Clubs everywhere were invited to join in and support the cause.

Members from netball clubs in the Manchester Evening Netball League accessorised with pink socks, leg warmers and sweat bands during their own matches, donating £1 each for the privilege. As you can see, even Hyde Netball Club’s website turned pink!

Visit Cancer Research and Race for Life to learn more about the charity and for more fundraising ideas.

Sporty People Wanted for BBC Documentary

We were contacted by the BBC recently to ask if we have any members who might want to take part in a new BBC3 programme.

Information about the documentary:

BBC 3 documentary about 16 – 25 year olds who are currently unemployed. A recent survey showed that one in five 16 – 25 year olds are not working right now and a third of men and a fifth of women aged between 20 and 34 currently live at home with their mums and dads – the highest level in 20 years.

We are looking for young people who would be willing to filmed during the process of looking for work. We hope to start filming soon, although there will be different starting dates for each person filmed. The length of time the person would be required is very much dependent on the candidates and what they are up to.

From the sounds of things the producers are after young people who fit a range of types  and perhaps they feel that someone from our club might fit the ‘sporty’ category :)

So, whether you are a netball club member or not, if you are reading this and interested in taking part you should get in touch with the BBC using either of the methods below:

Telephone: 0208 008 5955 or 07539 860 860
Email: bbc3doc@bbc.co.uk

(Please do not contact the netball club)

Look after your feet!

If you play netball regularly you will be no stranger to sore feet. But there are ways that you can help prevent the common problems we encounter. Here are tips for how to look after your feet before, after and in between playing netball.

  1. Regular washing and soaking of the feet is important after training or matches. Washing to remove sweat then soaking for 5 minutes in warm water with a handful of Epsom Salts in is very refreshing for burning feet.
  2. Drying of the feet correctly is very important to prevent various fungal infections. Athletes’ foot sometimes affects Netball Umpires due to the amount of heat and moisture around the toes for so long. Changing socks at half time, if needed, and washing socks (using fabric conditioner to prevent hardening of the socks) regularly is strongly advised.
  3. Try rubbing a little surgical spirit on the soles of your feet each morning of the days you will be training or have a match. This will help toughen the skin.
  4. Prior to training or matches, cover the soles of your feet with vaseline.
  5. Over time hard skin may build up on your feet. This is often the result of your skin building up protection against the forces it experiences. However, if the skin has ridges or roughening within it, then use a special footfile to smooth it down before it produces painful deep blisters.
  6. Keep your toenails trimmed, but cut them straight to avoid ingrowing toenails.
  7. Prior to training or a match, pad the balls of your feet with ‘Melolin’, a highly absorbent cushioned dressing pad. Place the shiny surface facing the skin so that it absorbs any sweat and prevents friction on the foot which causes blisters. The pad should be held onto the foot with zinc oxide tape or an adhesive dressing retention sheet called ‘Hypafix’.
  8. Always wear specific court trainers for Netball that fit correctly and are in good condition. Do not wear the same trainers every day.
  9. Choose footwear made of natural materials to allow your feet to breathe. Air your trainers before and after exercise to prevent a build up of bacteria.
  10. Do not walk barefoot in changing room

Hyde Netball Club AGM 2010 Update

Thanks to everyone who made it to the AGM last night and to those who sent apologies. If you weren’t able to make it please get in touch with Sam or Jo as soon as possible.

Some of the items discussed were:

  • 2010 Manchester Evening Netball League presentation takes place tonight (23rd April). Tickets are £4 each and proceeds are going to charity. HNC has made a donation of £50.
  • If any non members would like to attend training the first week is free, then it will be £3 per week. If they would like to join the fee is £12 per month.
  • Membership fees may be increasing next year. Please speak to a member of the committee if you want to know more about that.
  • We are making our annual trip to the Pontins netball tournament on 10th September. Mandy needs your deposit ASAP if you haven’t already paid.
  • Possibility of taking part in International netball tournament in 2011. Gill is looking into this and will update.
  • It was mentioned that there are an increasing number of instances where players are not respecting the umpires decision in matches. This is across all clubs, not just Hyde. HNC would like to stress to members that disrespecting the umpire is not acceptable. Please set a good example in all future matches.
  • Please can all members please also take some time to refresh their knowledge of the rules of Netball. (Will try to get a link or info on the website)
  • We need new team photo’s for the website (from 2009/10 season). Listen for updates at the club so you know when to come wearing your kit (and get your hair and make up done!). For pictures from the 2008/9 season see the gallery.
  • Lots of babies! Congratulations given to all new parents and parents to be.
  • Our best wishes and congrats to Donna for getting through a tough year.
  • Pat (our oldest member) has been awarded Life Time membership.

There was a lot more discussed at this 2 hour meeting. Please speak to any committee member if you would like to know more.
